THE IMPACT OF HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT IN A LONG TERM HEALTHCARE INSTITUTION (A CASE STUDY OF PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL NAWFIA), ANAMBRA STATE, NIGERIA.

Health information are essential for good health care. Their quality depends on accurate and prompt documentation of the care provided and regular analysis of content. Health information management professionals are health data needed to deliver high quality treatment and care to the public. (Adeleke I.T, 2014). The impact of HIM in a long term health care institution include the reduction of errors, improvement in clinical decision making during patient encounters and universal access to information in real time. The statement of problem identified in this research shows challenges of the transition to new comprehensive computer based models and lack of privacy, data security and access by non-clinical staff etc. which leads to the objectives of the study to determine the potential benefits of implementing the electronic health records system in long-term care facilities. The research questions and the hypothesis were aimed at realizing the objectives of the study. Moreover, a descriptive research survey design was adopted and employed. The researcher thus considered simple random sampling with the population of 50 from which the sample size was drawn to be 44 staff.
